Alligator Head Foundation
Alligator Head Foundation is a nonprofit marine conservation NGO created in 2016 by Francesca Thyssen‑Bornemisza, and supported by TBA21–Academy and UWI. The Foundation manages the pioneering East Portland Special Fishery Conservation Area—Jamaica’s first marine-protected zone stretching over six km of reefs, bays, mangroves, and wetlands.
Core activities include marine research at its lab, fish-stock surveys, coral/mangrove restoration, and scientific monitoring. Through education initiatives like JAMIN, sea turtle monitoring, and community workshops, they empower local fishers to transition into marine stewardship roles including dive guides and conservation wardens. The Foundation emphasizes a “ridge to reef” approach, integrating sustainable coconut-agriculture programs in collaboration with ITC, aiming to diversify livelihoods and bolster coastal ecosystem resilience. Recognition includes the 2023 SIDS Partnerships Environmental Award honoring its impactful partnerships in climate-smart development.
